Christine Nowmos teaches general/vocal music to grades 1-5 at the Mary S. Shoemaker School in the Woodstown-Pilesgrove Regional School District and has been director of the Shoemaker general/vocal music program since 1999. She leads the Shoemaker 3rd and 4th/5th Grade Choruses, the Select Chorus, the 3rd-5th Grade Percussion Ensemble, and has previously taught general music to grades pre-K and Kindergarten in Woodstown. Christine is also a hornline instructor for the Woodstown High School Marching Band and faculty advisor for the WHS Jazz Band. Prior to teaching in Woodstown, she taught elementary general/vocal music in Hamilton Twp. (Atlantic Co., NJ) Public Schools and instrumental music in several South Jersey parochial and private schools.
Christine received her Bachelor of Music degree in music education from Grove City College and her Masters of Music degree in music education from West Chester University of Pennsylvania. She holds certifications in the Kodály approach of music education from West Chester University and in Early Childhood Music/Elementary General Music certifications in Music Learning Theory through the Gordon Institute of Music Learning. In addition, Christine was a guest conductor for the South Jersey Elementary Chorus Festival in 2007, has published a research article on informance music programs in the professional journal General Music Today, and has been interviewed for articles in the NAfME publication Teaching Music.
As a performer, Christine began playing the euphonium in her school band in 7th grade after three years as a flute player. She continued playing euphonium and marching trombone in the Middle Township High School Band and was a member of the All South Jersey Band, NJ All State Band, and first chair euphonium in the New Jersey Governor’s School for the Arts Wind Ensemble. She was a euphonium major with a voice minor at Grove City College, where she was featured as a concerto soloist with the GCC Orchestra. She also played trombone in her college orchestra and jazz band and was a member of the Grove City College Touring Choir. Currently, she performs on euphonium in the pit orchestra for Woodstown High School’s musicals and occasionally substitutes on baritone with the Fort Delaware Cornet Band. Additionally, Christine is a pianist and has served as a piano accompanist for WHS’s choral program as well as for community choirs and musical theater productions. She performs professionally for weddings and other occasions on piano, flute, and voice, often with her husband Jeff, a professional guitarist. Christine lives in Woodstown with Jeff and her son George (who is also a euphonium player!).
